چکیده

Despite recent powerful tools aimed at creating virtual humans, the animation of such characters is still a major bottleneck in production, and there is a need to automate this task, especially when the number of involved agents grows. This work focuses on creating autonomous agents, capable of taking decisions based on their simulated perceptions and internal motivations. Since complete autonomy is still difficult to reach (and especially for such complex creatures as virtual humans), we favour a plan-based approach (which relies on some predefined behaviours), rather than Artificial Life techniques, in order to keep the results more or less “predictable”. In Virtual Storytelling, autonomy helps the agent reacting to unexpected events, but it more or less follows a predefined plot. This research discusses other related animation problems, such as creating, animating and coordinating movements, and especially how motions can be adapted through Motion Retargeting.

Integrating Behavioural Animation Techniques

Our research focuses on animating autonomous virtual humans which are able to take decisions by themselves. We especially address in this paper the technical problem of integrating altogether the physical simulation of agents (represented as virtual humans in a 3D environment) and their behaviours and motivations, driven by a Beliefs, Desires and Intentions architecture. We also explain how goa...

Toward life-like agents: integrating tasks, verbal communication and behavioural engines

We present a platform for animating communicative autonomous virtual humans. This is indeed a great technical challenge that involves the low-level animation capabilities (using the notion of tasks to handle concurrent gestures) to the high-level behaviour simulation as computed by our Intelligent Virtual Agent. In order to exchange information, a verbal inter-agents communication is also possi...

Autonomous Virtual Agents Learning a Cognitive Model and Evolving

In this paper, we propose a new integration approach to simulate an Autonomous Virtual Agent's cognitive learning of a task for interactive Virtual Environment applications. Our research focuses on the behavioural animation of virtual humans capable of acting independently. Our contribution is important because we present a solution for fast learning with evolution. We propose the concept of a ...

An Interactive Interface for Directing Virtual Humans

Research on Virtual Humans spans from body animation to speech generation. In many cases research systems are isolated software pieces and can only be used after a steep learning curve. In this paper a novel system is presented which integrates a large repertoire of Virtual Human research in one piece of user-friendly software, Virtual Human Director (VHD). This software achieves two important ...

Development of a computational cognitive architecture for intelligent virtual character

A development of a computational cognitive architecture for the simulation of intelligent virtual characters is described in this paper. By specializing and adapting from an existing structure for a situated design agent, we propose three process models—reflexive, reactive and reflective—which derive behavioural models that underlie intelligent behaviours for these characters. Various combinati...
